Homework

Write about 200 - 300 words analysing the representation of Australia and Australians promoted by this advertisement.

The Fosters "ibelieve" advertisement, represents a positive view of Australia to assist in selling the product. At the beginning of the advertisement, the typical Australian stereotypes such as "a kangaroo for a pet" are stated as incorrect, thus positing the audience to relate to the advertisement, and therefore attracting their attention. Throughout the advertisement, personal pronouns are used at the start of each sentence, positing the viewer to be proud of what makes up Australia's identity. In lines 13-16, the advertisement shows what makes Australia individual. They describe actions that are common; taxing and hamburgers for instance. But then go further to state qualities which makes these actions Australian; "beetroot on my hamburger" and "ride in the front seat of a taxi". These 'down to earth' qualities are connected with positive connotations, and this tactic is constant throughout the entire advertisement. As lines 5-7 describe Australia's' knowledge of loyalty but wish for peace, line 12 describes the "brotherhood" of Australia, portraying that Australia is a multi-cultured and accepting society.

Personally, I agree with this advertisement - it shows facts that represent Australia truthfully. However I do acknowledge that this is advertisement that is meant to sell a product. It has specifically chosen the best qualities of Australia, and with the upcoming Olympics, the country was feeling very patriotic, so an advertisement that excels these qualities will help greatly in selling the product.
